Search technique: Building block
Question: What are some good programs for children that can be run out of the public library?
  • Identify the component facets: children, library, program
  • Identify the terms for each facet: (children, child, kid, youth, young), (library, libraries, librarian), (program, activity)
  • Add Boolean logic: (children OR child OR kid OR youth OR young) AND (library OR libraries OR librarian) AND (program OR activity)
Result: I received 206 results and was most interested in the third hit on the list, an article
about cooking programs offered to kids by a public library:

Search Technique: Specific facet first
Question: What are some good programs for children that can be run out of the public library?
  • The most specific of my facets was (library OR libraries OR librarian) which came up with 8,657. This number is certainly to high and I would definitely want to continue to add facets to my search

Question: What are some good programs for children that can be run out of the public library?
  • Start with the broadest facet (program OR activity). Result: 77,132 hits
  • Narrow by adding second facet (child OR children OR kids OR youth OR young). Result: 7,186 hits
  • Narrow by adding third facet (library Or libraries OR librarian). Result: 339 hits
Results: I found the 3 hit on my results page interesting:
